The City
Sharing the magnificent estuary of the Tagus with Lisbon, the city of Almada offers, those who visit it, the tranquillity of the narrow streets of Old Almada and its belvederes, large windows over the river and the capital.
Forming part of the city, Pragal, grew on the hillside, topped by the monument to Christ the King, whilst to the south, Feijó has green areas linking the fields to the urban fabric.
However, for those who want to know more about the Municipality of Almada there is nothing like paying a visit to the City Museum, housed at the old Quinta dos Frades, in Cova da Piedade.
To live in the city is to feel it throbbing, to feel the art of good hosting of its people and the joy of youth. It is to stroll its streets and squares finding public art, resting in its parks and gardens, enjoying the coolness of an esplanade.
The Riverfront
In the picturesque inlets of the riverfront, one finds the places that keep the memories of river fishing in the gastronomy offered.
Until the middle of the last century Cacilhas was a summer location for the people of Lisbon who when they arrived opted for the river beaches or for the adventure of the donkey rides. Today, the old Ginjal Quay invites you for a peaceful stroll up to the Jardim do Rio (River Garden) that frames Fonte da Pipa (Fountain of the Cask), leads to the Naval Nucleus and challenges you to a trip on the panoramic lift.
In Trafaria, those who arrive by boat are welcomed by an impressive, but friendly fort. On land surrender yourself to poetry along the riverfront path and discover the beauty of the other margin from among the colours of the small fishing boats, through the tangle of ropes and the transparency of the nets.
The Atlantic Front
The quality of the landscape together with the vast stretches of sand where fishing relieves the visitor’s tedium meant the Atlantic Front was, from early on, a place destined for leisure and to spend summer. Even with the Costa da Caparica improvement works that are currently taking place, do not miss the festival of colours put on by the “Meia-Lua”, back from fishing at sea and the boards and sails with which the nautical sports enrich the palette of the horizon.
At the top of the cliff, the Convento dos Capuchos (Convent), with its garden and belvedere invites you to watch the spectacle of the sunset over the waters of the Atlantic.
La Ciudad
Compartiendo con Lisboa el magnífico estuario del Tajo, la ciudad de Almada proporciona a quien la visita la tranquilidad de las callejuelas de la Almada Antigua y de sus miradores, amplias ventanas que dan al río y a la capital.
Parte integrante de la ciudad, el Pragal, creció en las laderas que corona el monumento a Cristo Rey mientras que, al sur, Feijó ofrece espacios verdes que ligan el campo al tejido urbano.
Pero, para quien quiera saber más sobre el Concejo de Almada, nada como una visita al Museo de la Ciudad, situado en la antigua Quinta dos Frades, en Cova da Piedade.
Vivir la ciudad es sentir su pulsación, el arte de bien recibir de su gente, la alegría de la juventud. Es pasear por las calles y las plazas al encuentro del arte público, reposar en sus parques y jardines, saborear la frescura de una terraza.
Ribera fluvial
En las pintorescas ensenadas de la ribera se encuentran los lugares que guardan, en la gastronomía que ofrecen, las memorias de las faenas en el río.
Hasta mediados del siglo pasado Cacilhas fue lugar de veraneo para los lisboetas que, al llegar, optaban por las playas fluviales o por la aventura de las "burricadas". Hoy, el viejo Cais do Ginjal convida a un tranquilo paseo hasta el Jardim do Rio, que encuadra la Fonte da Pipa, conduce al Núcleo Naval y reta a un viaje en el ascensor panorámico.
En Trafaria, para los que llegan en barco, un fuerte imponente aunque amigable le da la bienvenida. Una vez en tierra, ríndase a la poesía en el paseo de la ribera y descubra entre el colorido de las pequeñas embarcaciones de los pescadores, a través del enmarañado de las cuerdas y de la transparencia de las redes, la belleza del otro margen.
Ribera atlántica
La calidad paisajística aliada al extenso arenal donde la actividad piscatoria atrae a su vez la atención del visitante, ha hecho que la ribera atlántica se transformase, desde muy pronto, en un lugar preferido para el ocio y el veraneo. Aun con las obras de recalificación de la Costa da Caparica en curso, no se pierda la fiesta de colores proporcionada por el “Meia-Lua”, de regreso de la faena del mar y de las planchas y velas con que los deportes náuticos enriquecen la paleta del horizonte.
En lo alto del acantilado, el Convento dos Capuchos, con su jardín y mirador, le invita a asistir al espectáculo de la puesta del sol sobre las aguas del Atlántico.
